No marketing fluff, just the math

WhatsApp Business API pricing in India, honestly.

Three numbers determine your monthly WhatsApp bill: Meta's per-message rates, your BSP's platform fee, and your BSP's markup on top of Meta. Here's exactly what each costs in India in 2026, what changed on January 1st, and how to choose between BSPs and direct Meta Cloud API access. All numbers verified against current published rates.

Layer one

Meta's actual per-message rates for India, 2026.

Meta charges per template message delivered — not per conversation, that changed in January. These are the rates everyone pays, whether you go through a BSP or direct Cloud API. The BSP just adds layers on top.

Message type Rate (India recipients) What it covers
Marketing ₹0.86 – ₹1.09 / msg Promotions, offers, product launches, abandoned cart, re-engagement
Utility ₹0.115 – ₹0.145 / msg Order confirmations, shipping updates, appointment reminders, receipts
Authentication ₹0.145 / msg OTPs, account verification, login codes
Service FREE Any message you send within 24h of a customer messaging you first
Utility within 24h window FREE Utility templates sent inside an active customer service window

The shift everyone missed: On January 1, 2026, Meta moved from per-conversation pricing (one fee for 24 hours of back-and-forth) to per-template-message pricing (one fee per template delivered). For most businesses this means broadcast-heavy use cases got slightly more expensive, conversational use cases got slightly cheaper, and templates that fire inside the 24h customer service window are now free.

Layer two

What BSPs charge on top of Meta's rates.

Most teams' WhatsApp budget goes here — not to Meta. Three biggest BSPs in India, their published 2026 pricing, what they actually charge once you factor in markups and add-ons.

Provider Platform fee Markup on Meta Notes
WATI ₹2,499 – ₹16,999/mo ~20% Per-agent fees, integration add-ons, chatbot locked to Business tier
AiSensy ₹1,500 – ₹3,200/mo 0% No markup. ₹750/agent above 5. Cleanest BSP pricing in India.
Interakt ₹1,166 – ₹3,500/mo ~12–39% Markup varies by plan tier and message type
Twilio Pay-as-you-go ~₹0.45/msg Twilio fee on top of Meta. Developer-friendly but most expensive at scale.
Direct Meta Cloud API ₹0 0% You handle setup, templates, automation, integrations yourself or via studio

For small volumes (under ~2,000 messages/month), the platform subscription dominates. For larger volumes, the markup on Meta rates dominates. The studio path makes most economic sense above ~3,000 messages/month, or whenever you need custom automation a BSP builder can't handle.

The decision matrix

BSP, direct, or studio — which path for your business?

Use a BSP (WATI, AiSensy, Interakt) if:

  • You want a managed dashboard your team can log into
  • Your use case fits standard BSP features (broadcast, FAQ bot, inbox)
  • You don't want to think about Meta verification or template submission
  • Your message volume is under ~3,000/month
  • You don't have a technical contact who can manage Cloud API

Build on direct Cloud API (via aivite) if:

  • Your message volume is consistently above ~3,000/month
  • You need custom flows or integrations beyond the BSP builder
  • You want to own the WhatsApp Business Account and templates
  • You'd rather pay once than rent monthly
  • WhatsApp is becoming your primary customer channel
Where the studio fits

We're the third option most people don't know exists.

Most articles compare WATI vs AiSensy vs Interakt and stop there. The third option is to skip the BSP layer entirely and run on Meta Cloud API direct — with a studio handling the work that a BSP dashboard normally hides. That's us.

Questions teams ask before deciding

The honest answers.

As of January 1, 2026, Meta charges per template message delivered (changed from the older per-conversation billing). For Indian numbers: marketing template messages cost ₹0.86 to ₹1.09 per delivered message depending on the BSP/Meta arrangement, utility template messages cost ₹0.115 to ₹0.145 per message, authentication messages cost ₹0.145 per message, and service messages — those sent within 24 hours of the customer messaging you first — remain completely free.

Marketing messages are promotional — sales offers, new product launches, abandoned cart recovery. Utility messages are transactional and tied to a specific user action — order confirmations, shipping updates, appointment reminders, payment receipts. Authentication messages are one-time passwords and account verification. They're priced differently because Meta wants to discourage spam while keeping operational messaging cheap.

Two layers. First, BSPs add a platform subscription fee — anywhere from ₹999 to ₹16,999 per month depending on tier. Second, some BSPs add a per-message markup on top of Meta's rate. WATI marks up by approximately 20%, Interakt by 12-39% depending on plan and message type. AiSensy is one of the few that doesn't add a per-message markup — they pass Meta's rate through unchanged and only charge the platform subscription.

Yes. WhatsApp Business Cloud API is Meta's official direct-access offering. You set up a WhatsApp Business Account, verify your business with Meta, get a phone number provisioned, and call Meta's API directly to send messages. There's no BSP layer, no platform subscription, no markup. The trade-off is that you need someone competent to handle setup, template approval, integration with your systems, and ongoing operations. That's typically what a studio like ours builds for clients.

On a BSP, setup is included with the subscription — you pay ₹1,500 to ₹17,000 per month from day one. On direct Meta Cloud API, the setup is the work — there's no monthly fee, but you pay once for the build. A typical studio build runs ₹35,000 to ₹1,00,000 depending on scope (templates, automation complexity, integrations). After that, you only pay Meta's per-message rates plus optional ongoing maintenance.

Meta switched from per-conversation pricing to per-message pricing on January 1, 2026. Before that, you paid one fee for a 24-hour conversation window, regardless of how many messages were exchanged. Now you pay per template message delivered. Service messages and utility messages within the 24-hour customer service window remain free. This change makes high-frequency conversational businesses cheaper, and high-broadcast businesses slightly more expensive.
